As more and more bandwidth hungry applications are deployed to the desktop, the network switches that were originally installed to handle text files and email are starting to creak at the seams. The growing popularity of multimedia applications which use a combination of sound, image and video are placing extra demands on the large installed base of Fast Ethernet switches even if they have Gigabit uplinks.
The deployment of high performance PCs and laptops which now come with Gigabit Ethernet adapters as standard is also placing an extra strain on the network infrastructure. Users expect to be able to make full use of their Gigabit adapter speeds and not be limited by the speed of the network switch. While existing Fast Ethernet switches with Gigabit uplinks were fine for connecting a few PCs and laptops equipped with 100Mbps Fast Ethernet, they are not appropriate for use in a company deploying the latest Gigabit capable PCs and workstations. For these environments a high performance Gigabit Ethernet switch with a 10 Gigabit uplink capability is absolutely necessary to give the required levels of control, network performance, security and reliability.
The availability of 10 Gigabit running over copper wires also means that file and compute servers can now be attached to the network at speeds previously unheard of. Building high-performance server farms requires switches which can perform at wire speed over multiple 10 Gigabit connections.
