More and more small businesses are becoming increasingly more dependent on fast and reliable access to their data files. For many, temporary loss or slow access to stored data can seriously disrupt their performance. Even worse would be the complete loss of data as this could paralyse all business activity indefinitely.
Correspondingly, in many homes, with the growing popularity of digital music, videos and photography, the need for a fast and reliable way to share multimedia files without having to duplicate everything on everyone’s PC or laptop, is becoming an increasingly important factor in setting up a home network.
To this day, both business and home users have overcome these issues either by setting up shared folders on a PC or by dedicating a spare PC as a file server that can be accessed by everyone.
Storing data in a shared folder on a hard drive attached to a PC can solve some of these problems, but if anything happens to the hosting PC e.g. virus attacks or hardware failures, access to this data is lost. Costly delays can occur if more storage capacity is required as either another PC or an extra hard drive must be installed.
Using a spare PC as a shared file server can help but if more than one person is accessing the data, the PC can turn into a bottleneck which will have a negative effect on the network it is connected to. Should more storage be required, there may not be enough physical space or interfaces in the PC to add another disk.
The easiest way to solve these issues is to use a Network Attached Storage (or NAS) server. A NAS server connects directly to the local area network (LAN) allowing everyone with network access to read and write to it. It doesn’t need to be connected to a local PC to handle read and write requests; as this processing is performed on the clients PC or laptop. Basically it is easy to install and expand and needs no IT expertise to look after it.
